Main Characters

“Main Characters” is an ongoing series of abstract drawings I began in 2020, when I was twelve years old. These compositions are made up of several elements derived from real-life objects. Each new piece is the result of exploring new shapes and the relationships between them, which has gradually led the entire series toward amorphous, fully abstract forms. Despite this, a few fundamental elements continue to reappear in every drawing — they have become the “main characters” of the series, which inspired its title. The entire cycle reflects how my style has evolved over the past five years.

Displayed here are some of the earliest compositions. At that time, they still had much in common with reality — I strictly adhered to the number of objects and their actual colors. Over time, I began breaking those rules in pursuit of complete creative freedom. The series is built on the evolution of ideas, which is why becoming familiar with the earlier works is essential to fully understand the newer ones.

Starting the Pascal Creativity Project turned 2023 and 2024 into a period of many significant discoveries. I began working on larger formats, something I had previously tended to avoid. I now often use ink, which allows me to work faster and more prolifically. Depending on the nib or brush I use, I’m able to achieve a variety of effects. Several black-and-white pieces from the “Main Characters” series were created during this time — I believe that the absence of color allows the viewer to focus more on composition and the relationships between individual elements.

Lately, I’ve discovered the potential of simple forms. I decided to focus on a single element from the “Main Characters” series. In a way, it’s a reference to the suprematist compositions of Kazimir Malevich, in which the artist aimed to express the “painterly atom” — the smallest possible unit in art. Although my works contain more elements than White on White, the main goal was still to reduce the means of expression. Despite their simplicity, these pieces have a strong impact and represent the culmination of several years of searching for new forms. This subseries is titled Biegnę dalej (I’m still running), as I created these drawings at the end of a year-long creative marathon — the Pascal Creativity Project. It is certainly not the end, but rather the beginning of the most exciting discoveries to come.
